Autism is a developmental disorder that changes the way a person interacts with the world and the people around them. Each person on the spectrum has different strengths and abilities that makes them unique, but with this diagnosis, individuals often face academic, occupational, and social challenges that can lead to isolation and a lack of opportunity. In addition, the neurological diversity associated with autism typically impacts communication, social interactions, behavior, and sensory response. Even though treatment options are somewhat limited, there are a variety of resources available to support each individual and their needs during each phase of their life. With these supports in place, barriers are often broken and significant contributions are made.
